Getting Started with InForm

Welcome to InForm! This guide will help you get started with exploring parametric designs and making the most of the platform's powerful visualization tools.

What is InForm?

InForm is a web-based platform that allows you to explore parametric design spaces created by engineers. You can:

  • Visualize 3D Models: See design variations in an interactive 3D environment
  • Explore Parameters: Adjust design parameters and see real-time changes
  • Compare Variants: Side-by-side comparison of different design options
  • Analyze Performance: View charts and data about design performance
  • Collaborate: Share findings and insights with your team

Accessing InForm

Authentication

InForm uses Azure Active Directory for authentication. You'll need:

  • An Arup email address
  • Access permissions granted by your project administrator

Browser Requirements

For the best experience, use:

  • Chrome (recommended)
  • Firefox
  • Edge
  • Safari (limited Unity WebGL support)

Your First Session

1. Sign In

  1. Navigate to the InForm platform URL
  2. Click "Sign In" and use your Arup credentials
  3. Allow the necessary permissions when prompted

2. Project Overview

Once signed in, you'll see:

  • Projects Dashboard: All projects you have access to
  • Recent Activity: Latest design explorations
  • Shared Projects: Projects shared by your team

3. Opening a Project

  1. Click on a project card from the dashboard
  2. Wait for the 3D model to load (Unity WebGL)
  3. You'll see the main interface with:
    • 3D Viewer: Interactive model display
    • Parameter Panel: Adjustable design inputs
    • Results Panel: Performance metrics and outputs

Interface Overview

  • Home: Return to projects dashboard
  • Project Name: Current project identifier
  • Views: Switch between different analysis views
  • User Menu: Settings and sign out

Main Views

  • Design View: Primary 3D visualization and parameter adjustment
  • Parameter Space: Explore the full parameter range
  • Trends: Analyze performance across variations
  • Compare: Side-by-side variant comparison

3D Viewer Controls

  • Mouse: Rotate view
  • Scroll: Zoom in/out
  • Right-click + Drag: Pan view
  • Double-click: Focus on object
  • Reset View: Return to default camera position

Basic Workflow

1. Explore the Design

  • Use mouse controls to examine the 3D model
  • Identify key design elements and their relationships
  • Note the current parameter values in the side panel

2. Adjust Parameters

  • Locate the parameter panel (usually on the left or right)
  • Adjust sliders or input values
  • Watch the model update in real-time
  • Observe how changes affect the design

3. Analyze Results

  • Check performance metrics in the results panel
  • Look for trade-offs between different objectives
  • Note any constraints or warnings

4. Save Interesting Variants

  • Use the "Save Variant" or bookmark feature
  • Add notes about why this configuration is interesting
  • Share with team members if needed

Tips for Effective Use

Performance Tips

  • Close unused browser tabs for better 3D performance
  • Use a dedicated graphics card if available
  • Ensure stable internet connection for real-time updates

Exploration Strategies

  • Start with extreme values to understand parameter ranges
  • Look for patterns in how parameters interact
  • Document interesting findings as you explore
  • Use systematic approaches when comparing options

Collaboration

  • Share specific variants rather than general project links
  • Add descriptive notes to saved configurations
  • Use screenshots to communicate findings
  • Schedule review sessions with stakeholders

Common Use Cases

Design Review

  1. Open the shared project link
  2. Review the current design state
  3. Explore alternative configurations
  4. Provide feedback through comments or saved variants

Option Evaluation

  1. Identify key evaluation criteria
  2. Create variants that represent different approaches
  3. Use the Compare view for side-by-side analysis
  4. Document pros and cons of each option

Parameter Sensitivity Analysis

  1. Start with the baseline configuration
  2. Vary one parameter at a time
  3. Observe the impact on design and performance
  4. Identify the most influential parameters
